Washington Regional Report 4/4/2015

Kyle here with a Regional report.

This last weekend was Washington state’s Regional event (which is also being followed up by another Regionals here in only two weeks, which is rather fast). It’s after April 1st, so it was one of the first Regionals with the new ban list. I, Kyle, went with Justen as well as 2 others (Seth, Rob and Asher) to the event in Seattle. I ran Shaddoll Artifacts and ended 6-2 getting 18th out of 250-ish people. Both my losses where to people who placed higher than me, hence me getting a pretty high rank despite being x-2.

The build I ran wasn’t perfect, I hadn’t really decided fully in my mind on a few things, but I figured I would learn as I went. As per usual, my side deck wasn’t all that spectacular, and I learned a lot about what I would do in the future during the event. Here’s the build I ran followed by the Regional report:

Round 1: Me vs. Justin (Nekroz)

Game 1:

He opens in a way that reveals he’s running Nekroz, but I don’t recall what he does exactly. I go second and have a very sub-par hand versus Nekroz. He has the capability to summon Trishula on his next turn meaning I had 3 options with my hand: do nothing to keep my field empty from Trishula and risk getting OTK’d, play my cards in a way that leaves me with no hand, or make a play and accept the summoning of Trishula and lost a bunch of advantage. I choose to invest everything into the board. On his next turn he ends up baiting my Sanctum and another trap card and then summon Exciton Knight to destroy everything I have (I have invested everything into the board). I get to add back El and normal Fusion to hand, but he summons a Valkyrus and tributes the Exciton leaving me with no options. I hold on for about 2 more turns then lose.

Game 2:

I choose to go second. Justin opens with the “uber” Djinn lock and don’t open with any of my Lancea or Veiler, to my chagrin. (The uber lock is the version of the lock where you first summon Lavalval Chain and Valkyrus, tribute both of them to draw 2, then search for 2 Ritual Spells with their graveyard effects, and last summon a Clausolas using Djinn, ending with 5 in hand) In the process he also searches a Trishula, which if you note in my deck profile up top, counters every possible card I have to break the lock except Torrential which naturually I don’t draw. I set a Dragon and end, but he cycles the Trishula to his hand for the rest of the game negating my 2 or 3 options I use to get out of the lock while he shortly there after attacks me for game.

I believe this guy ends up getting 4th.

0 – 1

Round 2: Me vs. Mike (Nekroz)

Game 1:

I don’t remember the game very well, but unlike my first match I actually draw Veiler and Lancea, which helps a lot. I win without taking any damage.

Game 2:

The game goes on for a really long time and for a moment I almost take control of the game, but a key MST on my face-down El Shaddoll Fusion seals my fate.

Game 3:

He goes first and forgoes the Djinn lock to summon an Abyss Dweller questionably, although I had the out to it so it’s hard to say if the game would’ve been much different. I go, just set 3 and pass. He attacks with Dweller and I don’t respond to it and he ends, during his End Phase I use Sanctum to summon Moralltach and kill Dweller. I slowly beat him down over time with Constructs protecting them with Veilers and Lanceas that I’m cycling with Call of the Haunted.

1 – 1

Round 3: Me vs. “Nathan” (?)

This is the round after lunch break and my opponent doesn’t show up for whatever reason. My friend Rob played his opponent this round only for them to notice they weren’t playing at the right table as he was about to sign the match slip. We suspect he may have been the opponent I was supposed to play, but it’s hard to tell because multiple people had no shows during that round.

2 – 1

Round 4: Me vs. Quinn (Agents)

Game 1:

I win the die roll and choose to go second. Quinn opens by summoning The Agent of Mystery Earth adding Venus, which surprised me. I noted to him aloud that he was probably the only person at the venue running Agents. Playful chatter continued through the entire match afterwards. He sets 2 with his Earth and ends. I summon Mathematician and he uses Herald of Orange Light discarding Master Hyperion to negate it (which to me makes me assume he has another Hyperion in hand). I set Beagalltach and Artifact Ignition and have a Lancea in hand I plan to activate as soon as he puts an Agent in the graveyard so I don’t die next turn. He uses MST during my End Phase and hits my Beagalltach, which really sucked. His turn, he summons Venus and gets 3 Shine Balls and Synchros for a Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn and pays 1000 to banish and I chain Artifact Lancea. He summons a Daigusto Phoenix and attacks me for 5600. I have an in hand Hedgehog and Beast so I assume I’m doing to lose, but I top deck El Shaddoll Fusion. I use my Ignition on his last back row and set Moralltach. I use El Shaddoll Fusion to summon Winda and search Falco. I Synchro for Moonlight Dragon with Winda and Falco and bounce Michael and attack over Daigusto Phoenix. I set Call of the Haunted that I drew and El Shaddoll Fusion. He goes and summons Hyperion, I use Call of the summon to Beagalltach and use it to pop Moralltach and Moralltach summons and pop Hyperion. One more turn happens, but I don’t remember what occurs, but I attack for game after it. I was super close to losing that game, but I came back with the perfect top deck. To be fair though, El Shaddoll, normal Fusion, Call of the Haunted, Mathematician, and Sanctum would have all kept me in the game, which is quite a few cards.

Game 2:

He has me go first and I do the Mathematician sending Squamata Beast because I drew Falco. He summons Venus on his turn and uses the effect and I Veiler. He had T.G. Warwolf and BLS in hand, so he would have wombo combo’ed had I not. He loses all momentum their and I beat him in the next to turns, summon a Pleiades on my next turn.

3 – 1

Round 5: Me vs. Keaton (Yosenju)

Game 1:

He goes first, plays the Yosenju L Pendulum, whose full name I don’t remember, sets 2 and then summons Cardcar D and I Veiler it. I then slowly beat him down with a Shaddoll Dragon, my ace monster (not really, but I ALWAYS draw Shaddoll Dragon, despite only running 1). I use Ring of Destruction and Torrential in addition to aid myself.

Game 2:

He goes first and opens with Macro Cosmos and I don’t open any Spell and Trap removal. He then draw Dimensional Fissure on his next turn and plays it and I stall for a while and still don’t draw any outs and lose eventually.

Game 3:

I draw Shaddoll Dragon and Ring of Destruction again (I also drew Ring game 2). I beat him down slowly again and eventually attack for game in one sweep using BLS.

4 – 1

Round 6: Me vs. Gabriel (Qliphorts)

I didn’t really expect to see Qliphorts at the tournament at all, but they where actually quite popular and 3 or 4 players topped using the deck.

Game 1:

Gabriel notes that he’s played me before saying I played Lightsworn Dragon Rulers, but I unfortunately didn’t remember him, so I feel a little bad about that. I probably should have asked him what deck he was using at that time and I probably would’ve remembered, or at least it would’ve been more likely. I don’t exactly remember this first game other than that I was pretty dominant. I end the duel with 2 Constructs, BLS and Leo on the field and he scoops. My score sheet says I took no damage.

Game 2:

He goes first and opens Scout into Carrier and Saqlifice set 2. My hand is pretty bad, so I make an aggressive play because I need to get the Scout of the field or I’m going to lose. I use Shaddoll Fusion, but he chains Shadow Mirror, I continue my fusion summon which I have to do with Hedgehog and Squamata in hand, my only materials in hand. I make a Winda and set some stuff I don’t remember. He promptly searches Stealth and bounces my Winda and a back row using Stealth and Carrier. I last a turn or so more then scoop.

Game 3:

The game ends up going on for a while and he ends up setting up a scale and making chump blockers to stall my Construct from doing damage. I have Torrential Tribute and a Shaddoll Dragon and BLS in hand for a while, which I’m waiting to use together later because he also has a Shadow Mirror. I end up drawing an MST before he draws a viable tribute monster (If he drew Stealth specifically I would’ve lost), I tribute my Construct to summon Shaddoll Beast and Torrential my Beast and already on field Dragon and chain MST on his Shadow Mirror. I had also drawn Dark Armed Dragon in between so I summon it because of the extra dark from the Beast and I use it to pop all of his remaining cards. I don’t summon BLS because it won’t be game even if I do. I attack with Dark Armed and end. He draws to 1 card in hand and no cards in field and activates Summoner’s Art and I chain Mistake and he scoops.

5 – 1

Round 7: Me vs. Sam (Qliphort)

Surprise! Qliphorts twice in a row… I didn’t really expect that. At this point I was really wishing I had sided Fire and Ice Hand.

Game 1:

I open what I would call “fair” against Qliphorts. He goes first and does Scout search Carrier, summons it and sets 4. I go and summon Mathematician with the intent of using Black Rose to go for the blow-out and he uses Compulsory on my Felis. I set a couple and end. He flips Saqlifice and searches Shell and tribute summons it and whacks me for a lot of damage. I don’t exactly all the plays I made, but it got to the point that I needed to Soul Charge 2 Mathematicians to survive and I do, but when he attacks them both with Shell I literally draw 2 Effect Veiler and then Lancea for turn and I scoop.

Game 2:

Similar opening as the previous game and he gets a Shell on board and I don’t use my face-down Torrential Tribute on it because I want to save it for my turn. I go, use Shaddoll Fusion to make Construct using Hedgehog and he uses Fiendish Chain on Construct, which I expect. Hedgehog gets Falco, I normal Falco and he activates Compulsory on the summon to bounce Construct and I chain Torrential re-setting my Falco and adding Shaddoll Fusion back to hand. The game goes on a few more turns but I eventually attack for game.

Game 3:

I make probably my biggest misplay during this game and it costs me the match. Sam has a Carrier and 4 set cards, one I read is a Mirror Force because of how lax he appears about me attacking him. I have a Beagalltach and a Scythe on board because I had used a Moralltach previously to clear his Scout. I have 2 DARK monsters in the graveyard and Mathematician and Dark Armed Dragon and another card I can’t remember in hand, I think Lancea. I choose to use Math sending Felis and he Compulsory Evacs. my Felis and then I attack with Scythe and he Mirror Forces. I stall a bit longer with Beagalltach but then he draws and flips Skill Drain and I have no outs an lose to his 2400 beaters in 2 more turns of attacks.

What I should have done, and I was contemplating, was send a Shaddoll Dragon and try to blind hit a back row. And then made Pleiades to potentially bait some cards and use it to bounce my Mathematician if he used anything on it. Then if nothing was used I could summon Dark Armed Dragon and protect it using the Pleiades as well by bouncing it if the opponent uses anything on it our bouncing any Continuous Traps that would effect Dark Armed. His remaining back row where Shadow Mirror and MST, he revealed after the match. So if I had gone blind Dragon he would have most likely used Shadow Mirror on the Dragon. Then I would have made Pleiades and then summoned Dark Armed Dragon. At which point I could have activated Dark Armed to kill Carrier and chained Pleiades to bounce Shadow Mirror. The safest thing for me to have done was also to not attack since I assumed he had Mirror Force. On his next turn he drew Helix. I would’ve then been able to bounce Mathematician and summon again to make the Felis play which would have greatly pressured him and potentially changed the duel. “My B”

5 – 2

Round 8: Me vs. Jordi (Nekroz)

Game 1:

When shuffling he drops a card on accident and I think I see a blue card which psyches me out a bit later. I win the dice roll and make him go first. He sets a monster and 2 back row. At that point I’m pretty confused because I assumed Nekroz, the only thing I can think he’d set is a Djinn. I summon Mathematician and send Felis. He thinks about responding multiple times but doesn’t and I make Black Rose and pop all three and they are Shaddoll Dragon, MST and Torrential Tribute. I now think that I’m playing against Shaddolls or some weird Shaddoll Nekroz deck, making me fear using my Extra Deck. I set 4 and then end. He sets 2 and ends. I summon Squamata and attack and end. He draws then passes. I do an Artifact play during his End Phase to get out a Lancea and on my turn I use a combination of El Shaddoll Fusion and Call of the Haunted to attack for game ignoring his back row because I assume they don’t do anything after the amount of summoning and attacks he allows.

Game 2:

I side like I’m facing Shaddolls, which isn’t all that terrible against Nekroz because I side in Vanity’s Emptiness and De-Fusion. Vanity’s is obvious and De-Fusion circumvents Valkyrus. I go first and summon Math and he Veilers. I pass because I fear Denko so I don’t want to set El Shadoll or Ignition and he’s been declaring phases since game 1. He uses Nekroz of Clausolas getting Kaleidomirror and sets a monster and passes, and at this point I realize I’m actually playing the Nekroz build that runs Armageddon Knight and Shaddoll Dragon. I attack his face-down on my turn with Math on my turn and it’s Dragon again and he doesn’t use its effect. I pass again. He sets 2 spell/traps and passes on his turn. I summon Squamata and attack with it first (I’m assuming since he hasn’t done anything he has two Ritual Spells set and he used the Clausolas so he can Valkyrus my attacks. I attack first with the Squamata because I don’t want to have to use El Shaddoll Fusion on Math to continue my attacks if he uses Valkyrus) He ends up letting both through and I set 2 and pass. He goes and passes again (I don’t understand how he has so many cards that don’t do anything). During his End Phase I use Ignition on one of his cards and then set a Lancea. I use El to fuse Squamata and Hedgehog making Winda. Hedgehog adds Beast and Squamata send Dragon popping my Lancea to summon it. On my turn I tribute the Winda for Beast and add back El Shaddoll Fusion and enter the battle phase. I attack with Beast and he uses Valkyrus so I El and make Construct. I attack with Math then Lancea then Construct and that’s game.

6 – 2

So ya, ended 18th, which makes me pretty happy.

Changes I would make to my deck:

  • Soul Charge was completely useless, I took it out immediately after the event.
  • I added in Book of Moon and Raigeki because they’re helpful against Qliphorts and I decided I wanted more outs to Diamond and the Djinn lock after what happened during my first match.
  • I also added in a Peropero Cerberus because I wanted more EARTH monster so I would make Shekhinaga more for a more helpful Nekroz match-up, additional Djinn and Diamond out.
  • I could easily change up the Extra Deck, I never made Volcasaurus, Gaia Dragon, Castel, Armades or the second Shekhinaga. I might swap the Volcasaurus and Gaia Dragon for something else, but I don’t know what. Probably will add Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn. Once the next pack comes out I can add in the WATER Fusion. Maybe FIRE Fusion so I can El with Black Rose in case my opponent uses Fiendish or Veiler etc.
  • For the Side Deck: I will definitely be siding 2 Fire and 2 Ice Hand in the future if I can get a hold of them. I will run 3 MST instead of 2 MST and 2 Trap Stun because Qliphorts. Rather than Breakthrough Skill I’ll probably side Mirror Force for Diamond, Fiends and Dark Law. Probably won’t side Emptiness in the future because just 1 isn’t impactful enough for me.

Also, I won’t have an article next Monday because I’ll be away on a trip with my family, so see you the week after next!
