Yugioh Investment Portfolio (YIP) 1: Week of 2/26/12
Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Yugioh Investment Portfolio (henceforth abbreviated YIP). The purpose of these articles are to give some insight into the ebb and flow of Yugioh card prices, and help you get information on popular cards, archetypes, and packs so you know the right time to buy and unload key cards. If there’s one thing you need to take away from these articles it’s this: timing is everything.
A Little Stun Science
Pretty much everyone is complaining about the new format and how Maxx “C” and Effect Veiler are completely necessary, but that’s not true. The only legitimate reason people feel they are necessary is because being looped by Wind-Ups will cost you the game if you’re not running them, but that once again is untrue. People for some reason are unwilling to build decks that can bounce back from situations such as this, and the most basic way to do this is to build a deck that can effectively maintain advantage with low hand counts as well as top-deck good cards consistently.
Regionals and Stuff
Hello everyone! Been a couple days since the Washington Regionals and I figured rather than give the whole spiel on the podcast I could give a quick report here as well as some other interesting things I learned at the event. By the way, this article’s pretty long, so prepare!
ORCS Post Review: Photons
Here we are, Order of Chaos is now officially released, and I figured it be a nice time to talk about some of the really surprising and over looked cards from the pack. One archetype that I honestly thought was just plain garbage for a long time I’m starting to realize is actually quite strong and that’s Photons. Right before the pre-release I looked at them more extensively and found them to be better than I expected, but after testing them out they’re actually really cool.
Card Review: Elemental HERO Bubbleman and Blade Armor Ninja
I’ll start off by saying today’s article will be a short one, there’s not a whole lot to say about Elemental Hero Bubbleman, but what there is to say I find very interesting. For a very long time the Hero Beat decklist has been for the most part untouchable, aside form some minor tech choices. (Hero Beat refers to the stun build of Elemental HEROs revolving mostly around Elemental Hero Neos Alius, Gemini Spark and some other thrown in cards to help utilize Miracle Fusion )The deck really had been brought to its maximum with the current cards we had, and there wasn’t really any thought of there being Elemental HERO support in the future. But, from obscurity came a new decklist involving Elemental Hero Bubbleman having him replace, the seemingly better in every way, Elemental Hero Ocean. Possibly the worst of the original Elemental HEROs, Bubbleman finally gets his debut in the spotlight due to and interesting XYZ monster that only he could bring out so efficiently and effectively.
Deck Review: Volcanics
One thing I always find funny in Yugioh is when cards go out of style that are good. The top tier in Yugioh is not only what’s good, but also what is still cool. (and thus overplayed most of the time, pushing the odds in its favor of winning large scale events) And then on the opposite end of the coin “uncool” decks get underplayed. (and thus are less likely to win large events because so few if any are used at events) Decks like Six Samurai, that are honestly just amazing decks get no play and people rarely try to re-engineer them to work in newer metas because they are no longer cool. Another good archetype or engine I should say, is Volcanics. Volcanics are an archetype that are supremely underplayed. They’re all ugly and they don’t do anything flashy. Recently I’ve been experimenting a lot with them and have found a lot of success using them as a small engine. Volcanics boast consistency as well as strong monster destruction that I think is very viable for use in a competitive deck. So today, in this article, my goal is to inform you, the reader, of possibly a archetype you’ve never considered and I hope that you would, and that is Volcanics.

Overview:
Evoltile Odonto is a somewhat frustrating monster from the Evol Archetype that asks you to invest heavily onto the field. At present, with Photon Shockwave as the latest release, the climate is not quite temperate enough for starting a play with Odonto.
With 500 attack and 1200 defense, it is not a monster that anyone would want to summon or set without good reason. Since its effect leaves it vulnerable to attack, and therefore punishment, one would expect a reasonable return for such an investment. The results are somewhat worth the investment, let’s take a look.
